Fall is in the air and it's officially apple season! Crispy, juicy and fresh from the orchard, apples are the perfect transition from summer into fall. As the nights get cooler, build a campfire and treat yourself to one of my fall favorites - Pie Iron Salted Caramel Apple Pies.

Pie irons are a great way to cook over a campfire and can be used to create virtually limitless recipes. They come in cast ironaluminum, with a non-stick coatinground versions, and even doubles.

This sweet treat is a nice change from S'mores and is perfect for a Campfire Dinner Party.

Ingredients:

2 Apples, finely chopped
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1 t. Cinnamon
4 T Chopped nuts
Caramel dip or Kraft caramel bits
Maldon or course sea salt
Soft white bread
Stick of butter, softened


Create:

Mix apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nuts in a bowl. Butter two slices of bread. Place one slice of bread in the bottom of the pie iron, butter side down. Add 4 T of the apple mixture. Drizzle with caramel sauce or place 1 T of caramel bits on top of apples. Sprinkle with sea salt. Top with second slice of bread, butter side up. Carefully close pie iron and lock. 


Place in coals of campfire, turning occasionally, until bread is golden brown (approximately 3-6 minutes depending on if the pie iron is already hot). Carefully flip apple pie onto wooden cutting board or plate. Eat as a handpie, or serve on a plate with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and chopped nuts.
